Originally, these were safety warnings attached to various aircraft checkpoints requiring imperative verification before takeoff. Its 1st appearance dates back to the 2nd World War, but more significantly in the 1960s in the United States.
To make it easier to find, it usually takes the form of a long, bright-red (purple in aerospace) flame made of flexible fabric or polyester, inscribed with the words REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT. Other shapes and applications have been developed, for example to block the propellers of a stopped engine, to cover an air intake or to protect a Pitot probe.
